Maneta Goes Into Hair & Beauty Business

Former Big Brother Africa housemate, Maneta Mazanhi is now into buying and selling hair and beauty products in Harare. The eye candy, who was booted out of the reality series after a tiff with fellow countryman Rockford Josphats in last year's season, is seen driving around town in her VW Beetle bought by businessman Wicknell Chivayo.

"Yes, I am running a small business supplying beauty and hair products. The only thing is I don't sell to individuals, but to companies that buy in bulk," she said.

Asked whether she bought the car from the profits from her business, Maneta opened up saying she got the car from her brother Wicknell.

"Well, I got the car from Wicknell. It wasn't a present as such, but he was just honouring his promise. You remember he promised to buy the car for me and I guess he is a man of his word," she said.

Contacted for comment, Wicknell said he bought the car sometime last year.

"Don't you think it is now water under the bridge? That car was bought last year and I even paid her university fees for two years in advance.

What happened is that I wanted to buy her a VW Polo for US$28 000, but she opted for a smaller and cheaper car that is why she is driving a VW Beetle," he said.

Follow Your Dreams, Millicent Advises

Former Big Brother Africa finalist Millicent Mugadi has a word of advice for those who will be applying to be part of the reality TV cast for Big Brother Africa 8.

“Go for your dreams!” she says, “Being in the house is not just about fun, it is a task. So, when you get the chance to be a representative, use it also to grow personally and be what you have wanted to be.”

The actress turned politician adds, “It is about time we brought the money home. After all, last year we were very close.”

This year, entry is open to the same 14 countries as the year before with the only exception being Liberia, which will be replaced with Ethiopia.

(Entry forms available at www.africamagic.tv/bigbrother)

Producers are looking for persons who are fluent in English, entertaining and passionate about the Big Brother experience. Applicants are advised to apply well before the Valentine’s Day deadline, to be among the superstars in waiting to flirt with fame and fortune.

Previous editions of Big Brother Africa have boasted huge cash prizes for winners and this year the victor will walk away with $300 000.

Millicent Clinches TNA County Rep Ticket

A few media personalities made a dip into politics this election season. One of them was Millicent Mugadi, former Kenyan representative at the Big Brother Africa Amplified reality TV show.

The actress got the nomination as a County Representative for Ziwani Ward on a TNA ticket.

"I have realised politics is not acting or writing a script, it's a serious game, and I think I have learnt a lot in my first experience. I have so much respect for all the women politicians in Kenya now," she told actors.co.ke.

As March 4 approaches and Ms. Mugadi prepares to take on the ODM and Wiper rep, she adds, "Politics is no joke. It is one of the most difficult things I have ever done."

Malonza, Alex And Prezzo Dish Out BBA Tips

Be open, confident and be yourself. That’s the advice offered to anyone interested in contesting for a bed in Big Brother’s house this year.

As MultiChoice rolled out the chance to apply online (entry forms available at www.africamagic.tv/bigbrother) on Tuesday, the Kenyan brothers, who contested last year say that the best way to ace the auditions is being open-minded, interesting, and natural.

Loverboy Malonza Chege, who had the girls swooning in Downville, said a love for the show is an added advantage.

“You have to be open, interesting, and captivating in order to stand out during the auditions,” he said. “By being in the house I can tell you that something which also really helps, is if you go there knowing you really want to be in the show. Don't just shrug and take the audition because you can. Having that attitude will give you drive... and lastly have fun!”

Malonza, who was involved in a bit of a love triangle in BBA StarGame, adds that if he had a magic wand, he would have changed the way he nominated housemates while in the house.

“I’d say that when nominating, since you can’t see what’s happening on the outside, contestants have to think hard and strategise so that they maximise their chances of staying in the game.”

Malonza’s brother Alex was of the same mind saying, however, that the girls should dress as they would usually and not as if they were about to step into a night club.

“I wouldn’t change anything about how I played the game, but I have made an observation. The people who do well are somewhat dominant. They lead rather than follow while in the house. That’s a key point to note,” said Alex, who bore the brunt of negative publicity for putting up his compatriot Prezzo for possible eviction.

Journalist and BBA fan John Makau meanwhile is hoping that there will be fewer housemates this year.

“I think there should be one housemate per country rather than two. They should also alter the voting system so it’s as simple as possible,” he said.

Prezzo intimated that anyone in the house must realize that they are being watched.

“It’s a reality show. They can never forget that it’s a reality show. Even if they are being real, they have to think of things from a viewers’ point of view. You have to be entertaining and outstanding. If you’re male think of the female viewers and vice versa.”

Step Up, Big Brother Wants You! Show Begins May 26

The eighth edition of Africa’s biggest reality series Big Brother Africa kicks off in May and already fans of arguably the most successful television franchise ever seen on the continent are asking…who will the new housemates be? Who will find their name and their faces gracing newspapers, their profiles loaded to websites and blogs? Who will become the subject of drive time radio and just who will find themselves heating up the Twitter-sphere?

At this time there is no way to know this but if you meet the entry requirements and enter between now and Valentine’s Day on February 14, you may well be among the superstars in waiting and may find yourself flirting with fame and fortune!

This year, entry is open to the same 14 countries as the year before with the only exception being Liberia which will be replaced by Ethiopia for this year. The replacement comes as AfricaMagic and series producers Endemol SA rotate certain countries into and out of the format. The reason for this is to ensure that a wide range of countries can be included in different editions of the series.

As a result of the change, participating countries this year are: Angola, Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Entry is open to all those persons over the age of 21, who are citizens of one of the participating countries and who either have a valid passport or will be able to obtain one by the end of March. Producers are looking for persons who are fluent in English, entertaining and passionate about the Big Brother experience. Of particular importance to the selection team are the qualities of tolerance, determination and enthusiasm. If you are open-minded, bold and adventurous, that’s even better!

Entry forms are available immediately at www.africamagic.tv/bigbrother so visit the website and complete the online submission form. Printed entry forms will also be available at MultiChoice offices in the participating countries from February 1, 2013.

As with previous editions of Big Brother Africa, the new season will have a twist…and according to

M-Net Africa Managing Director Biola Alabi, who has helmed the production for the past four years, the big surprise this year is one that audiences are expected to fall in love with. “As always, we won’t say much about the new season but I can confirm that we’ve added a new element that I think will get the hearts of viewers racing. The fact that the fans truly adore the show is all the motivation we need to keep it fresh and fun!”

Her views are echoed by Endemol MD Sivan Pillay who says, “Our long-term association with M-Net is very much a partnership, a marriage of sorts. We understand what they desire for their audiences, and they trust us enough to let us develop innovative twists and surprises. So the process is quite harmonious and very exciting, as all good relationships should be. I am hopeful that this year we are creating a red-hot show that will include familiar trademarks like nominations and evictions alongside a very special new development.”

Previous editions of Big Brother Africa have boasted huge cash prizes for winners and this year the winner will walk away with USD 300 000.

More information on Big Brother Africa 8 will be made available over the next month, so stay tuned to AfricaMagic, follow the action on Twitter and Facebook and keep checking the website.  Big Brother Africa 8 will be screened live 24/7 on DStv channels 197 and 198 while GOtv audiences will see highlights of the program which begins on Sunday May 26 and is scheduled to run for 91 days.

Vimbai Tries Her Hand At Acting

Big Brother Africa Amplified (BBA) housemate and Star Gist co-host Vimbai Mutinhiri is branching out into acting. We had a chat with her about her debut film role in the movie Finding Love which also stars former BBA housemates.

The movie is directed by Kabat-Esosa Egbon.

How did the opportunity to act in the movie come about?

This opportunity was quite a fluke. I was approached by the production team who had literally been keeping an eye on me since Big Brother Amplified. I received a phone call out of the blue one day and I expressed an interest in viewing the script and instantly fell in love with it.

Which familiar faces are in the movie?

The movie features Bryan Okwara, Tinsel's Victor Olaotan as well as Luclay Misoya and Babalwa Mneno.

When did you go and shoot the movie and who long did it take?

Finding Love is a Nollywood movie with a twist. The movie has six stories within it. I was able to shoot my role in South Africa. This was shot in November last year, and shooting in SA went on for about three weeks.

What character are you playing?

I play a successful young professional called Zara. She's a young lady who is coming into her own and is somewhat secretive and reserved, and seems to hold herself and her desires back under her colleague and friend Iva's shadow as Iva is much more outspoken and outgoing (Iva played by Babalwa Mneno). This manifests itself in a rivalry of sorts and the dynamic between the two builds up into a juicy and hilarious story line when cute boy Uche (Luclay Misoya) is thrown into the mix.

How did you find the transition from hosting a daily show to a movie set?

The transition was much tougher than I expected, because although I got into character quite easily I had to fight the urge to present to a camera or an audience. The toughest part was being able to switch my body language on and off appropriately because I was shooting both the movie and Star Gist concurrently. However once I settled, I was quite happy in my role.

Vimbai says she enjoyed the thrill that came with shooting Finding Love and is looking forward to doing more movies this year. “I really enjoyed the thrill that being on set and getting into character brought. I'm definitely looking forward to working on plenty more movie sets.”

She concludes that she would like the opportunity to work with directors Kunle Afolayan and Hakeem Kae Kazim.

Millicent, The Reality TV Star Turned Politician Fears For Her Life

Former Big Brother Africa Amplified housemate, Millicent Mugadi who is vying for a political seat in Ziwani as a county representative has revealed that she fears for her life.

Millicent said that over the past few weeks she has noticed a number of men who have been trailing her and also witnessed the same men disrupt her community meetings with Ziwani constituents.

"I would like to appeal to political parties to provide security for their candidates. Some of my rival contestants have been sending people to my meetings to heckle and disrupt the meeting. They have also removed and torn up my posters. All this is done to intimidate me but I will not give up," Millicent said.

She added, "As the strongest candidate on ground and a woman I have a right to campaign freely my constitution allows. It's important for security to be put up to protect strong women like me on ground."

Millicent who grew up in Ziwani estate, Nairobi said she is passionate about preserving the culture of the area and has on several occasions spoken out about the land grabbing that is rampant in the area.
